From sTALKs to The Stalker.

I’m changing my blog’s name from sTALKs to The Stalker, the main reason being I want it to have a niche. Hahaha! I don’t know if I’m going to be more active in the next days, weeks, months, but I’m definitely trying to make my blog more useful (ermmm).

So, there you go. From now on, it’ll be more ranting and ranting. HAHAHA. 50% kidding. Hope you learn more from The Stalker in the coming days.

Bye for now.

Anchee Min’s Empress Orchid

It’s been a while since I’ve read a whole novel. Most of the time, I’d settle for shorties or short stories because novels take too much time. So unless I can stay awake the whole night or be a certified tambay in the next days, I can never finish a good novel in one sitting.

Anchee Min’s Emopress Orchid left me with these lessons and thoughts:

1. That poverty is a state of mind. I first heard this statement from a valedictorian who was a few years older than me. I cannot recall his school nor his name, but I agreed when he said this. Poverty is nothing but a state of mind. There is always something you can do about it.

2. That the world is one big marketplace. There are things and concepts that can be bought. There are people who can be bought. But there are ideals, philosophies, values and belief that many people would still die for.

3. That even the thinnest bamboo cannot be broken by the harshest wind. It might be the Emperor and his decisions. It might be Su Shun (one of the antagonists) and his goals. It might be Nuharoo’s dignity and grace. It could be Orchid’s resilience.

4. That you only have one chance to jump on the biggest ship. And the most difficult questions are: How do I know that it is the right one and how do I get there?

5. That you, and you alone, get to draw your destiny. There’s no other way it happens.

This book is a good read. Go read (much better if you can fish one out of Booksale) if you have time. :)

Thinking and Doing.

“The best time to plan about writing a novel is when you’re washing the dishes”.
-Agatha Christie

Perhaps I am one of those unfortunate people to not know who Agatha Christie is. I can only associate her name with the Enlgish Lit. That’s it. Heck, I’m even too lazy to Google her. Let her be part of those who will always stay a mystery to me until I gather enough willingness and Internet connection to research about her.

But I found this quote on the sidebar of my WordPress dashboard, congratulating me for my 365th post. And I can really relate with her.

I find it difficult to squeeze out peso-worthy thoughts without doing a non-thinking job. Sometimes, I would volunteer to rinse our clothes just so I can have time to come up with a discussion-worthy TVC concept. All these, because I am easily distracted when I am just sitting down with a pen in my hand.

I think about food. About him. About sitting in the toilet and reading a book about a dead person. About my family. About what I will be eating for dinner. About the food I have in my bag. Whether somebody remembered to text me. Whether I’ll die at 50. The list goes on.

But if my hands are occupied, I barely think about food and I never yawn. And usually, doing non-thinking chores do me good. For starters, I was able to land a job in the two areas I really love–Advertising and Journalism.

Love writing.

I never thought I’d find myself writing professionally.

More often than not, I see a lot of errors in what I write. Sometimes, its within the data given to me. I misspell words or forget to include important contact details.

On certain occasions, I would find grammar mistakes after reading my work. I would confuse the purposes of dashes and hyphen and so on. I’m lucky if I detect them. If I can’t, online softwares or my boss will. Ouch.

Because of this, I fail to fully appreciate my outputs. I can see more faults than facts. More errors than essence. (Does this makes me a good copy editor then? XD)

But recently, I stumbled upon a blog (which URL and name escaped me) containing something like this: “Ten reasons to appreciate the writer in you.” I read until the bottom, but what caught my eye was the number 1 reason: Write, write, write. Forget about editing.

Then it hit me. I wasn’t there to edit. I was there to write. Writing is more challenging than editing. It is the reason millions of people are online/ reading print media. I was supposed to make a goldmine out of a single crap and sell it to a lot of people. This is the part where I should be free. I should be the one to add as many marshmallows and rainbows to my creation.

So I began doing just that. I wrote and wrote, and didn’t mind the technicalities for a while. But, I never forgot about editing. The crap will stay as such when it’s not polished. After writing, I did my best at editing. This time around, I am not as anxious.

I still have a few misspelled words, here and there. I still forget to include logos and some contact details. But this time around, I am happier with my work. It has more facts, more essence, more heart. Write like it’s your last. :)

Speeches and why some people do not listen to them.

People love compliments.

This is a known fact. But there are just some who ache for them. It’s like every listener is required to drop everything he or she is doing and listen to him speak.

I experienced this and boy, even though he was affiliated with a former client, am I glad I did not lie.

He was an important officer for a Russian Embassy. I was in-charge of the program flow for an event here in Cebu. I was all over the place, all the while attending to their needs. (Although it was not one of my tasks, I admit I can be pretty ‘epal’ or if I put it in a more understandable term, ‘hospitable’. LOL)

We were introduced earlier and I kept filling him in about the details of the program. He will be speaking in behalf of the Embassy and the Russian Federation.

After an hour and 30 minutes, we saw each other in one of the hallways of the Cultural Center of Cebu. He looked very pleasant, came up to me and excitedly asked if I heard him speak and how would I assess it.

I apologized for not having done so and told him I was busy. He looked crestfallen, took it badly and turned his back on me.

Whaa–. Hello, I’m no DC Comics character. I was saddened that I did not have even a moment to listen, but after a while, I realized I did the right thing. If I made time for him, the other parts of the program may not have pushed through. He is (in a way) a client but as the in-charge of the program, I also have other tasks to do.

It saddens me that not a lot of people can understand the ‘other things that happen’ in a short span of time. It is kind of selfish (I know, I am one too, but not in this case).

Oh well. Everyone is not an audience of just someone, I guess. Even if you’re really, really important wherever you came from.

Videoke sessions with people who used to be strangers.

I miss these people.

This videoke session happened over four months ago, and I am wondering if it will happen again. Some of them may not be the people whom I have known for more than a year, but it seemed that there is instant friendship between us. One that has a chance of lasting forever.

:)Hope we can have one of these again.

from Singapore, with love.

My first Christmas card for this year did not come from someone I had met personally.

It should not come as a surprise because I am connected with a PR firm but when the card arrived, I was a bit shocked.

It came with a red envelope with my name was neatly scribbled outside. It had no return address.

I thought: Hala, a rejection notice from one of my online applications? They’re rich, huh? Then I thought: it couldn’t be. It had to be something else.

And there it was, a folded scented paper from SMILE Magazine’s Jil North. I never expected to receive one from her because we were not close and we only corresponded/ worked together via email. It was thoughtful of her to send me one. She even handwrote a simple Christmas message for me.

It was the first Christmas card I got from someone I have not yet seen. I certainly hope it would not be the last.

SMILE Magazine was the magazine for Cebu Pacific. The company I work for engaged with Miss North because it would help one of our clients if they get a spot in the magazine.
